410 shotgun?
My wife wants a 410
She is afraid of the kick of a 12 ga. I told her 410's are worthless am I right? would a 410 be worthless for home defense? how many 00 buck shot could fit in a 410 shell? thanks guys |
Re: 410 shotgun?
.410 has value in a Pistol like the Judge that also shoots .45 LC

Re: 410 shotgun?
Otherwise, why not buy her a 12-gauge then get 20-gauge reducers to lessen the kick ???

Re: 410 shotgun?
Just have her shoot a 12 or 20 with skeet loads then work up to bigger loads.
My darling wife unit demanded a pretty Browning BPS 20 gauge, its a nice smooth gun but when we hit the skeet range with witnesses she takes my batterd old Winchester model 12.:banghead: You can't win this, I'm just trying to save you money. |
Re: 410 shotgun?
I wouldn't want to get shot by a 410. But, Im not a narcotic fueld zombie!!! (tonight)

Re: 410 shotgun?
Why even worry about it. Buy her what she wants. Anything is better than nothing, right? Let her get familiar with shooting the .410 ... then, when she's comfortable, step her up to the larger sizes ... if she's willing. Nothing worse than putting a too large weapon into the hands of someone without the confidence to handle it.

Re: 410 shotgun?
thanks guys
Thanks profesur. Those are good points. It is better than nothing and it would allow her to get used to shooting a shot gun Hey And I like that Judge 410/45 pistol! Very cool. would be a great snake gun with some 6 or 7 shot in it |
Re: 410 shotgun?
The 410 shotgun isn't useless, but it would not be my first choice either. Start her with the 410 in a pump like the Mossberg Bantum and get her started. After she is comfortable with that ...give her time to become proficient...then try a twenty gauge. The Bockshot rounds for 410 hold 3 pieces of 00 buck and a hit with that is better than a flinching miss from a 20 or 12.
As I said I don't advocate the 410 and for home defense I think you would better off with slugs rather than buckshot. The Taurus Judge is what you hop[e your attacker will be armed with...they don't work. I personally know of 6 that have been returned multiple times because they lock-up and turn into oddly shaped paperweights. No one I know has kept one very long. |
Re: 410 shotgun?
The Judge comes with either a 2.5" or 3" chamber, with the larger capable of handling both 2.5" and 3" .410 shells. The larger shells hold 5 pellets of 000 buck (0.36" vs. 0.33" for 00 buck). The 3" version didn't come out until recently, and I don't know whether those 2 extra pellets would be enough to persuade Judge bashers. I have the 2.5", which is pleasant to shoot with S&B 2.5" .410 buck. For some reason, most birdshot I've tried recoils more harshly and the cases often stick in the chambers.

Where do you get these? I have never seen them before anywhere. |

Re: 410 shotgun?
410 is a damn fine rabbit and squirrel getter.
Doesn't fill em full of lead, doesn't tear em up to bad. One of my favorite guns was a savage 410 pump.. until it was stolen. Then there is the story of the squirrel who wasn't as dead as I thought it was, who then proceeded to bite quite near through my finger when I went to pick it up by the tail.... But I digress.... |
Re: 410 shotgun?
Get a saiga 12 and drop the chamber to 20 gauge, until she gets used to the idea that not all shotguns kick like mules.(the mass of the bolt carrier in a saiga-12 absorbs most of the recoil. Makes a 3" magnum slug feel like birdshot.)

Re: 410 shotgun?
To answer the question 3 pieces of 00 buck fits in a .410.
now, going to a 20 gauge doesn't help, because there are low-recoil or tactical 12 gauge loads, but these don't exist for a 20, so the 20 actually can kick more than a 12. Have you considered a pistol caliber carbine like say the Kel-tek or Hi-point? |
Re: 410 shotgun?
go with the 12 ga.
start with low brass light loads and then low recoil 00 buck. add the Blackhawk recoil absorbing stock and a padded shooting vest. |
Re: 410 shotgun?
Buy her what she wants.
Look at it as a breakin product. Follow with a 28 Guage then a 20 (HAHAHAHAHAHA) E-A |

Re: 410 shotgun?
I concur with the 20 ga. Get her a 20 and youll both be happy.

Re: 410 shotgun?
20ga and a knoxx stock.
|
Re: 410 shotgun?
Just get her a double barrel 10 gauge !:confused_ma:

Re: 410 shotgun?
If it is recoil that is the problem look at a pistol caliber carbine like the beretta storm or a kel-tec. A .410 just isn't going to offer the performance you want unless you are shooting slugs through it. But the 410 slugs have only about the same performance of a .45, but at several times the price. This makes practice expensive and practice is what will save your ass.

Re: 410 shotgun?
I have a lever action Marlin .410.
Loaded with slugs or buckshot I would not feel helpless in a home defense situation. You might want to look at that option for her. Also, Mossberg makes a pump action .410 shotgun with a spreader for home defense. That would also be perfect for her to handle. |
Re: 410 shotgun?
I have never shot one, but Saiga 12 or 20 comes highly recommended from friends. Fast cycling and soft recoil.
